Taryn Smith is 26 years old. She rowed 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean entirely alone, in 46 days, becoming the first American woman to compete in the World’s Toughest Row as a solo athlete. She is from Nebraska, the most landlocked state in the country. She had never rowed, never lifted, and was not a collegiate athlete when she decided to do this.
I have been a physician for a long time, and I can tell you the natural human inclination is not to strap yourself alone to a 24-foot boat in the middle of an ocean. So the question I kept returning to across our conversation was the one that matters most to the work I do: what does it actually take, in the body and in the mind, to execute something almost no human body has ever done?
Fear Is the Metric, Not the Obstacle
Most people assume an athlete like this must be wired without fear. There is a small subset of humans, certain free-solo climbers and elite operators, whose brains simply do not register threat the way yours does. Taryn is not one of them. Her fear center is fully intact. She felt terror throughout the crossing.
What is different is the direction she runs. For her, fear is not a stop sign; it is confirmation she is standing exactly where growth happens. During training and out at sea, she used panic as a metric of success. If she was afraid, she was doing the thing she came to do.
This is the concept of strategic discomfort, and it is trainable. Five years ago she could not have rowed an ocean, but she could move to the mountains alone, be the slowest hiker in the group, and be willing to be a beginner. Each uncomfortable threshold she crossed raised her tolerance for the next one. Viktor Frankl wrote that there is a space between stimulus and response, and that our freedom lives in that space. Taryn has spent years widening it, largely through a steady yoga and breath practice. Radical accountability is not a personality trait you are born with. It is a capacity you build by repeatedly choosing the harder rep.
The Part Instagram Doesn’t Show: Three Years of Training
Here is the piece that never makes the highlight reel. This row took three years to build. She signed up in 2022 and trained in earnest for two years under a coach who specialized in ocean rowers, learned sea safety, navigation, and first aid, lived on her boat at a marina in England, and rowed out into the North Sea to earn the skill.
I want to draw attention to how she trained, because it is a masterclass in engineering the body for a task rather than simply grinding at it. She did not row twelve hours a day in preparation, which is what she would face at sea. She rowed only three times a week to avoid burnout, built gradually from ten- to fifteen-minute blocks up to five- and six-hour sessions, and spent the rest of her time lifting. She had never touched a barbell before, and she fell in love with getting strong.
Most important, she understood the mission. In her words, resistance training was for injury prevention and mental resilience, not for mimicking the volume of the row. She anchored her programming to the core and the legs, because a rib injury or a blown-out back in the middle of the Atlantic is the single most dangerous thing that can happen to a solo rower. That is not a suggestion-based approach to fitness. That is risk management. She trained to defend the body against the one failure that would end everything, and it is precisely why she could still walk when she reached land.
Your Food Is the Engine
Out at sea, Taryn rowed roughly twelve hours a day and carried about 4,000 calories a day across 85 days of supplies. And she discovered something on the water that most people never get to see so plainly: her food was the engine.
When the wind held steady and her boat slowed, it meant one thing. She needed to eat, because she was the only thing powering that vessel across the ocean. Her relationship to food reorganized itself around a single, honest variable: what she ate directly determined what her body could do. As she put it, women are handed a great deal of confusing and misleading information about food, and there was something deeply validating about watching a meal translate into forward motion. That is what nourishment is for. Not restriction. Propulsion.
Interestingly, her appetite dropped at sea even under enormous work, which is why she leaned on foods she genuinely wanted to eat and on essential amino acids to protect her muscle tissue. Fuel that goes uneaten is just weight you drag across an ocean. The lesson holds on dry land: the goal is not to eat less of what you need, it is to anchor adequate protein and calories so the machine has something to burn.
Muscle Is the Organ of Longevity
This is the part of Taryn’s story that I find most instructive, and it is the heart of everything I teach.
She lost about 15 pounds on the crossing, starting near 175 at five-foot-seven. Fifteen pounds in that window is significant. And yet she preserved the majority of her muscle. Why? Because she had spent two years building it under load, and because she prioritized protein and amino acids the entire time. Her muscles, remarkably, never felt fatigued in the way she expected.
Contrast that with what typically happens when the body is placed under a large caloric deficit without resistance training and without adequate protein: you surrender lean mass. Skeletal muscle is your organ of longevity, your ultimate metabolic reserve, and research consistently indicates that resistance training combined with sufficient protein is what defends it under stress. Taryn did not lose muscle by accident and she did not keep it by luck. She kept it because muscle mass is physiological currency, and she had earned it in advance and refused to spend it carelessly. That is the non-negotiable baseline, whether you are crossing an ocean at 26 or protecting your independence at 76.
Regulating the Nervous System Under Load
Around week five or six, the ocean turned. A wave spun her boat due south when she needed to point west, the sky went overcast so she lost the sun she had been using as a landmark, and for a stretch of roughly a week the conditions were relentless. She feared, at times, for her life.
What kept her functional was not the absence of fear but a trained nervous system. She used a simple breath pattern, two inhales followed by one long exhale, that reliably down-regulates sympathetic tone and calms the system. She had rehearsed crisis scenarios in detail long before she needed them, so her physiology had somewhere to go when the worst arrived. And she made one small, brilliant adjustment to her journaling. On the days she could not access gratitude, she wrote down five beautiful things instead, and she found it pulled her out of the darkness almost immediately, because even in acute distress the mind can locate beauty when it cannot yet locate thanks.
She also borrowed a piece of wisdom from a prisoner of war who survived captivity alongside John McCain: be a long-term optimist and a short-term realist. This is going to end, but it is not ending in the next minute. Hold the outcome loosely and the moment honestly.
I will name the one variable that nearly broke her, because it is the one people underrate most: sleep. Her cabin was hot, damp, and dripping. Sun exposure left her covered in hives, and for two days she could not sleep at all. That sleepless stretch collided with her hardest weather, and it was the day she looked at the sky and said she wanted her mother. Sleep is not a luxury you earn after hard work. It is the substrate the hard work runs on.
The Crash After the Summit
Here is the consequence almost no one prepares for. In clinical practice we see it repeatedly: the higher the peak, the deeper the trough on the other side. Taryn hit what the rowing community calls the post-row blues, and hers was worse than anything she had been warned about. She was irritable, snapped at people she loved, and could not understand her own behavior until she recognized it as part of the physiology of coming down from sustained adrenaline.
There was a second surprise. Despite months of constant physical activity, her heart rate rarely climbed, so she came home genuinely out of cardiovascular condition and could barely run two miles. Her body was strong and deconditioned at the same time, which is a useful reminder that “active” and “fit” are not synonyms, and that the specific stress you train is the specific capacity you build.
Her recovery has been deliberately gentle: resistance training twice a week, a few runs, yoga most days, a marathon on the calendar, and the patience to relearn her own hunger cues. She is, in her words, letting things settle. Especially given two years of relentless structure, that steadiness is not a retreat. It is the recovery phase of a well-designed continuum.

Treat fear as a compass, not a wall. Train to defend the body against catastrophic failure, not merely to perform. Anchor adequate protein and calories so your food can actually fuel you.
